Precautions for Using Tourniquet:
- Time: The time to use the tourniquet should be as short as possible, 1 hour is appropriate, due to special circumstances, it is necessary to extend the use time of the tourniquet. The longest continuous time does not exceed 3-4 hours. During this period, you should relax once every 0.5 to 1 hour, 3-5 minutes each time, and then bandage on the surface. It is forbidden to tying the same part repeatedly, and the tourniquet is more effective when used in conjunction with other medicines/sterile dressings such as wound cleaning.
- Marking: Patients who use tourniquet should wear tourniquet use card, pay attention to blood type, start time, position and relaxation time of tourniquet.
- Keep Warm: Keep your limbs warm, especially in winter. After the limbs block the blood stream, cold resistance is low, and frostbite is prone to occur. The upper tourniquet cannot be covered to facilitate observation of bleeding at any time.
- Observation: Bandage quickly. The bandage should not be too tight or too loose. The knotted or fixed part should be on the outside or front of the limb. During the transfer of upper tourniquet patients, the injury and the condition of the affected limb should be closely observed, such as whether the tourniquet is off, severe pain, or purple. The environment should be adjusted.
- Relaxation: After the tourniquet is relaxed, if the bleeding is severe, you can press the bleeding artery with your hand. If the wound does not bleed, you do not need to continue using the tourniquet. However, it should not be removed immediately. It should be maintained in a loosened state and continue to observe until the bleeding has stopped.
- Discontinuation: The tourniquet should be loosened slowly when stopping the tourniquet to prevent sudden increase in blood stream in the limbs, damage to capillaries and affect the redistribution of blood throughout the body. Even if the blood pressure drops, after removing the tourniquet, caress the injured limb lightly to relieve discomfort such as coldness and numbness.
- Taboo: The tourniquet is sealed and packaged, pay attention to hygiene, try to take one person and one tourniquet; this method is forbidden to stop bleeding when the distal end of the injured limb is obviously ischemia or severe crush injury.
